Many students openly state that they “hate” study. A very small proportion is constitutionally “indolent” and unresponsive to normal academic urging by parents and/or teachers. By assessing aptitudes, interests and latent aptitudes psychologists can help this group to drop their hatred of study and to find an area that will provide a spark for enthusiasms and the beginnings of academic growth and the improvement of general life-competencies.

A much larger proportion of students are under-performing academically (and also in the social lives), right now, due to a history of disadvantages which include incompetent teachers, and negative self-images generated by parents and/or teachers and/or peers. This group needs psychological assistance to identify their strengths and potential enthusiasms, and to overcome the damaging habits of negative self-perceptions. In short, they need to become convinced of their potential and motivated to achieve it.

Although Vocational Guidance Psychologists can provide comprehensive information on a student’s current stage of emotional, motivational and academic development students often return, after Vocational Guidance, to the contexts in which their negative habits and attitudes initially developed.

Post Vocational Guidance Remedial and Development Tuition

Our Psychologists always provide suggestions for further development in our Vocational Guidance reports and follow-up counseling interviews. The comprehensive Vocational Guidance procedure (assessment, feedback, counseling, engagement in career preparation) usually leads to increased confidence, competence and academic performance. Unfortunately, those who most need continued support often do not receive it and progress can be sub-optimal. Therefore, in order to ensure continuing benefits of the Vocational Guidance experience we have developed a program of flexible tuition focused on core competencies which form the basis of academic competitiveness, self-confidence, enjoyment and progress.

These include:

  1. Special techniques for increasing verbal fluency – vocabulary, speech and writing.
  2. Supplementary training in basic numeracy in enjoyable, motivational contexts of speed-training.
  3. Modern techniques of memorization and recall.
  4. Coping with the disliked school subject(s).
  5. Maps, diagrams, art and non-verbal self-expression.
  6. Innovation and creativity.
  7. Handwriting speed and stamina.
  8. Reading Speed.
  9. Personal time management.
  10. How to enhance one’s Emotional IQ.
  11. Overcoming low academic motivation.
  12. Study and Examination techniques.

We are confident that Vocational Guidance followed by 5 x 2 hour sessions and associated practice of 20 minutes per session will lead to an average of one year of academic advancement.

Tutoring Philosophy

Our tutoring philosophy is that each student should be understood on an individual basis. Training techniques are selected for speed and effectiveness of impact on academic performance and self-confidence. Where appropriate, study is presented as potentially enjoyable and like a game or competition with objectives/goals, rules of play and life-long benefits.

This program is as appropriate for the gifted/talented student who may be over-working (risking “burn-out”) or bored, as for the under-performer who must be compensated for early difficulties not yet overcome!
